In the village itself are two cafes and a restaurant, where you can sample the traditional dish of goat cooked in wine. The narrow lanes of the village are shaded by plane trees, and the scents of wild mint and walnut trees waft on the breeze.
Just down from the village is the old olive press, where people from miles around would gather with their olive harvest, to party and convert their crop to olive oil. Quirky little houses made from xisto (a slate-like stone) were built to house the visitors, and are still standing close to the beautiful Roman bridge that crosses the river to the press. Today the area is a popular swimming spot, where it is possible to swim upstream in crystalline water bordered by vines and olive trees.
Twisting tracks make their way up the steep sides of the valley, that are covered in pine and arbutus trees. This is a magical place to experience nature close at hand: a lizard basking on the wall in the sunshine, or a wild boar glimpsed by the road side at sunset. In the river are some of the finest brown trout in Europe, and fly-fishing is a popular sport.

In August the campsite is a popular destination for Portuguese holiday-makers, and it is not unusual to see families camping with their TV sets, fridges, microwave ovens and many other home comforts! The proximity to your camping neighbours is close at this time of year, but not uncomfortably so.
Also available at the campsite are “open-space” chalets for rent: these are simple wooden structures which comprise a kitchenette, double bedroom (with additional single bed) and bathroom with hot water, and a patio outside.
The campsite is situated centrally in Gois, above the river, and is only a few minutes’ walk down to the riverside café and swimming beach, and over the river to the shops and bars of the town. Coming back up again can take a little longer!

The village is set high above the river Ceira, and from it lead fantastic paths up to the Cabeco do Gato (963m) giving splendid views of the whole region. After you have walked on the mountain or swum in the beautiful clear waters of the river Ceira, there are cafes and bars in which to sit and recover, while watching Portuguese life go by.
Colmeal is famous for its picturesque little houses built from xisto (a slate-like material). Today the houses of the village are still stepped up the mountainside with little lanes and passageways running between them. Even in mid-winter the air is heavily scented with a mixture of wood-smoke and pine that fills the senses.

The tapestry of forest, villages and river valleys is impressive enough on its own, but looking over the valley in the morning, when it is shrouded in a vast ocean of mist, is an awe-inspiring experience.
The village is made up of some new, but mostly old stone houses. The population is mainly Portuguese, but there are also English, Belgian and German inhabitants. There is a guest house in the village - Casa Azul – in a prime location for viewing the morning mists from its large balcony.
Behind the village the tracks lead up to the Serra da Estrela mountains, where as you walk higher, the pine and arbutus give way to heather and moorland. The Romans came to this area many centuries ago, in search of minerals, and there are several caves in the hills round about where it is thought they extracted lead, silver and gold.
Here in Liboreiro you get the best of both worlds – the wonderful views that come with the altitude, but also the cafes, shops and facilities of Gois just 4km away.
